| ABOUT ATHENS |
| There are eight hills surround the city. The most
prominent are the Acropolis and Lykavittos. The hills provide a
peaceful respite as well as stunning views of the glistening Saronic
Gulf. You should not miss the recognised symbols of Greece which
is a triangle area defined by Plateia Syntagmatos, bounded by Plaka;
Monastiraki; Kolonaki and Omonia.
Plateia Syntagmatos is dominated by the old Royal Palace and is
the business district of luxury hotels, banks and upmarket shops.
Plaka is the old Turkish quarter which you might almost imagine
yourself in a village, far from the city. It's full of small beauties:
Byzantione churches; Old University, the fragmented ancient arches
and walls. Monastiraki is the market district, where kitsch-collectors
will find much to their interests. Kolonaki is a classy residential
area, full of trendy shops, art galleries and cafes. Omonia, the
traditional quarter, is an important transport center for buses.
